LLMBrake vs LiteLLM budgets
Per-customer AI budgets: LiteLLM proxy vs the in-process llmbrake library.
At a glance
| LiteLLM proxy | LLMBrake | |
|---|---|---|
| What you deploy | Drawback: A proxy server, plus Postgres for budgets and spend; Redis for cross-instance counters | Advantage: Nothing: a library in your existing app |
| Request path | Drawback: App → proxy → provider (extra hop) | Advantage: App → provider |
| Per-customer $ budget | Advantage: /customer/new with max_budget and budget_duration, or a default budget |
Advantage: budgetUsd as a number or a function of customer/plan, per calendar month |
| Without a database | Drawback: Budgets fail open (no cap is applied) | Advantage: In-memory store works out of the box; Redis or your DB for multiple servers |
| Cheaper model near the cap | Drawback: Budget fallbacks, configured per virtual key | Advantage: Per customer: downgradeAt + downgradeMap |
| Budget changes | Drawback: Customer budget objects cached up to 60 s | Advantage: Read from your code on every call |
| At the cap | Advantage: Request rejected by the proxy | Advantage: BudgetExceededError before the provider is called |
| Routing, retries, key management, admin UI | Advantage: Yes, a full gateway | Drawback: Out of scope (use alongside your SDK or gateway) |
| Margin per customer (cost vs revenue) | Drawback: Not a feature | Soon Hosted dashboard, early access for founding members |
Notes
- LiteLLM customer budgets are global per deployment (one budget per customer ID across all keys and teams). Per-model budgets on keys and users are an Enterprise feature. LiteLLM reserves estimated cost before a request, which helps under concurrency.
- LLMBrake v0.1.0 covers chat-completions-style usage. Verify the bundled price table against your provider. Concurrent calls for the same customer can overshoot the cap by about their own cost.
